La Wanda Moorer has spent nearly three decades building a human resources career at Lockheed Martin, where she currently serves as director of human resources for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Fort Worth, Texas, and as a member of the company’s Advanced Development Programs Line of Business Leadership team. Her responsibilities include managing human capital and critical HR initiatives across major sites in Texas, California, and Georgia, and she has held numerous HR leadership positions throughout her tenure with the company. Moorer holds a juris doctor from Golden Gate University School of Law, with a specialization in labor and employment law, and an English degree from Santa Clara University. Just as she brings structure and balance to complex HR strategy, Moorer applies the same thoughtful planning to travel, favoring an approach that blends adventure with rest rather than overloading a schedule or leaving a trip unplanned.

A beach vacation is the perfect chance to step away from a busy routine, soak up beautiful surroundings, and try something new.

However, cramming too many activities into the trip can leave you feeling exhausted and wishing you were still on holiday when you get home.

On the other hand, spending every day lounging by the water may leave you wishing you had explored more of your destination. Finding the right balance between adventure and relaxation lets you enjoy the best of both worlds.

  • Prioritize, don’t overload

Start by resisting the urge to fill every day with activities. Before you travel, write a short list of the experiences you truly want—snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, sightseeing, or visiting local attractions. Selecting a handful of priorities leaves room for spontaneity and prevents the vacation from turning into a back to back itinerary.

  • Alternate active and restful days

If you spend one morning hiking, exploring a nearby town, or engaging in a water sport, consider making the following day slower. You might spend the morning at the beach, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, read by the pool, or simply walk along the shoreline. Alternating activity and downtime gives your body a chance to recover while keeping the trip interesting.

  • Mix adventure and relaxation in a single day

A common strategy is to combine both elements within the same day.

For example, start the morning with paddleboarding or snorkeling, then return for lunch at a local restaurant and a few unstructured hours on the beach. This approach works well for travelers who want to stay active but still have ample time to savor the peaceful side of a beach destination.

  1. Choose low intensity explorations

Not every excursion has to be physically demanding. A sunset cruise, a local food tour, a scenic drive, or a visit to a cultural attraction can provide a sense of exploration without requiring hours of strenuous effort. Varying the intensity of your experiences helps you stay energized throughout the trip.

  1. Leave room for the unplanned

Vacations don’t always have to be “productive.” Some of the most memorable moments happen when nothing is scheduled: discovering a quiet stretch of beach, stumbling upon a hidden restaurant, or simply lingering at the hotel because the sunrise is too beautiful to rush away. Flexibility lets you respond to how you feel rather than constantly watching the clock.

  1. Let your accommodation support the balance

Choosing a resort or hotel with beach access, a pool, fitness facilities, or a spa makes it easier to unwind between excursions. Staying within a reasonable distance of the attractions you want to visit also cuts travel time, making active days less exhausting.

  1. Redefine relaxation and adventure

Relaxation doesn’t require doing nothing, and adventure doesn’t mean pushing yourself to the limit. Relaxation might involve swimming in the ocean, enjoying a favorite meal, listening to music, or watching the sunset. Adventure could be trying a new activity or exploring an unfamiliar spot.

The goal is to shape a vacation that reflects what you truly enjoy rather than what you feel you’re supposed to do. By planning thoughtfully, alternating effort and ease, and leaving space for serendipity, you’ll return home feeling refreshed—not exhausted—and with a collection of both thrilling experiences and tranquil memories.
